Standard installation sequence
Four essential phases for safe structural panel installation.
- Verify structural beam or angle support surfaces are clean, level, and within engineered span tolerances.
- Check bearing depth: ensure minimum 1.0 inch (25mm) seating on steel supports and 1.5 inches (38mm) on concrete.
- Dry-lay initial row starting from primary fixed reference lines to confirm layout symmetry across the span.
Note: Never trim structural bearing bars on site without engineering approval.
- Use saddle clips or G-clips with 1/4-20 stainless steel or galvanized fasteners positioned over support flanges.
- Place clips at minimum 4 per panel (one at each corner), plus every 48 inches (1200mm) along intermediate supports.
- Torque fasteners evenly to 12-15 ft-lbs. Over-tightening may distort grating mesh or crush perforated rims.
Note: Fastener hardware must match panel metallurgy to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- Apply 3/16-inch fillet welds minimum 3/4-inch long on alternating bearing bars at every structural support.
- Stagger welds across adjacent bars to minimize localized heat buildup and prevent warping.
- Treat exposed weld areas immediately with zinc-rich primer or matching protective coating.
Note: Qualified AWS D1.1 welders required for all primary structural attachments.
- Maintain a 1/4-inch (6mm) nominal gap between adjacent panel ends and side margins for thermal expansion.
- Align transverse cross-bars and perforated pattern rows across contiguous panels within ±1/8-inch (3mm).
- Ensure vertical run elevation variation does not exceed 1/16-inch between adjacent panel joints to avoid trip hazards.
Note: Maximum allowable out-of-square tolerance is 1/8-inch per 5 feet of diagonal length.

Mandatory personal protective equipment
Cut-resistant ANSI Level A4 gloves, steel-toe footwear with puncture-resistant shanks, hard hats, and eye protection with side shields.
Edge protection and fall arrest
Install perimeter safety cables or temporary barricades before removing existing decking or laying initial structural panels.
Secure panels immediately
Never leave unsecured panels on open steel frames. Fasten or clamp down every panel before taking breaks or leaving the active work zone.
Mechanical lifting & rigging
Use nylon slings with edge protectors for crane lifting. Prevent panel bending by lifting bundles with multi-point spreader bars.
