The different gauges of a wire determine how strong the wire is, and the breaking strength is the amount of weight it takes to break the wire. The following wires are described in order of how quickly they break with a tensile tester.

9 Gauge Low Carbon Wire

stretches 13% and breaks at 1,200 lbs, making it ideal for corralling cattle, hogs, and other large animals. 

12.5 Gauge Low Carbon Wire

or “hog wire,” is used in field fences with one 13% stretching strand breaking at 500 lbs, while barbed wire has two strands breaking at 1,000 lbs.

12.5 Gauge High Tensile Wire

used in deer, cattle, hog, sheep, and goat fences, stretches 1.5-2% and breaks at 1500-1600 lbs., making it three times stronger than low carbon wire. Its stiffness makes it unsuitable for barbed wire.

14 Gauge High Tensile Wire

stretches only 1.5-2% and breaks at 800 lbs, providing a 1,600 lb breaking strength in barbed wire. It is available in 2- and 4-point barbed wire and field fence.

15 Gauge High Tensile Wire

has a high carbon content, causing it to stretch only 1.5-2%. It breaks at about 550 lbs, allowing barbed wire to withstand up to 1,100 lbs.
