ASTM E2016 – Industrial Woven Wire Cloth

ASTM E2016-22 covers industrial woven wire cloth for general industrial use, including particle separation. This guide explains its scope, key requirements, typical applications and important considerations when specifying woven wire cloth.

Table of Contents

ASTM E2016-22 is a specification for industrial woven wire cloth used for general industrial applications, including particle separation. It provides requirements relating to wire cloth characteristics, tolerances, workmanship and delivery.

Standard: ASTM E2016-22
Product: Industrial Woven Wire Cloth
Standard Type: Product Specification
Primary Use: Industrial Screening & Particle Separation

Scope

ASTM E2016 covers industrial woven wire cloth, also referred to as wire cloth, for general industrial use including the separation of particles. The specification applies to wire cloth made from primary metal or metal alloy wire suitable for weaving.

The standard covers normal ranges of double-crimp square mesh wire cloth, expressed by mesh count, and space cloth, expressed by width opening. It establishes terminology and requirements relating to wire tolerances, wire cloth tolerances, mesh or opening requirements, workmanship and delivery.

ASTM E2016 does not cover certain specialized wire cloth products, including filter cloth or Dutch weave, Fourdrinier and cylinder cloth, galvanized hardware cloth, insect wire screening, spiral weave wire cloth, testing sieve cloth and welded wire cloth.

Key Requirements

ASTM E2016 addresses several technical characteristics of industrial woven wire cloth, including:

  • Mesh count or opening characteristics
  • Wire diameter and wire tolerances
  • Mesh or opening tolerances
  • Wire cloth tolerances
  • Workmanship and wire cloth blemishes
  • Delivery requirements

The applicable requirements depend on the type and specification of wire cloth being supplied.

Typical Applications

Industrial woven wire cloth covered by ASTM E2016 is commonly used where controlled openings and particle separation are required, including:

  • Industrial screening
  • Particle separation
  • Material classification
  • General processing equipment
  • Screening media for industrial applications

The standard should not be interpreted as an application-specific performance standard. The suitability of a particular wire cloth depends on the material, opening, wire diameter, weave, operating conditions and other application requirements.

Buyer Considerations

Referencing ASTM E2016 alone is generally not sufficient to define a complete purchasing specification.

When requesting industrial woven wire cloth, buyers should confirm:

  • Material or alloy grade
  • Mesh count or opening size
  • Wire diameter
  • Weave type
  • Width and length
  • Applicable dimensional tolerances
  • Quantity
  • Inspection or testing requirements, where applicable

For stainless steel woven wire cloth, the stainless steel grade should be specified separately from ASTM E2016.

ASTM E2016 and Stainless Steel Woven Wire Mesh

ASTM E2016 is not a stainless steel material standard. It addresses industrial woven wire cloth and can be applied to wire cloth manufactured from suitable metals or metal alloys.

For example, a purchasing specification may identify a product as:

Stainless Steel 304 Woven Wire Mesh, 10 Mesh, 0.60 mm Wire Diameter, Plain Weave

with ASTM E2016 referenced as the applicable industrial woven wire cloth specification.

The material grade and product specification therefore serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

MutualMetal Approach

When ASTM E2016 is referenced in a customer specification, MutualMetal treats the standard as part of the technical specification review rather than as a standalone product description.

During quotation and order confirmation, we review the required material, mesh count or opening, wire diameter, weave type, dimensions and applicable tolerances.

Where inspection requirements are specified, the relevant characteristics can also be incorporated into the quality-control process.

For stainless steel woven wire cloth, ASTM E2016 may be used as the industrial wire-cloth specification while the stainless steel grade is specified separately.

ASTM E11 covers wire cloth and test sieves used for testing purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable with ASTM E2016 for general industrial woven wire cloth.

ASTM E2814

ASTM E2814 addresses industrial woven wire filter cloth. It is relevant when the application specifically requires filter cloth rather than general industrial woven wire cloth.

ISO 9044

ISO 9044 provides requirements for industrial woven wire cloth and is a relevant international reference when specifying industrial woven wire mesh.

GB/T 5330 covers industrial metal woven wire cloth with square openings and is a relevant Chinese standard for industrial woven wire mesh.

Reference Note

This page provides a practical interpretation of ASTM E2016 for product specification and procurement reference. It is not a reproduction of the ASTM standard.

Standards may be revised or superseded. Users should verify the applicable edition and obtain the official standard from ASTM International when contractual, engineering or compliance requirements depend on the standard.
