Technical Specification Guide

How to Choose Checkered Plate

A practical guide to selecting pattern geometry, base thickness, material grade, and surface protection for walkways, stair treads, vehicle beds, running boards, and industrial floors.

Pattern profiles

Compare diamond, two-bar, five-bar raised ribs and fish-eye, crocodile-mouth punched plates.

Material & thickness

Assess carbon steel, stainless, or aluminum alloy base thickness under specific loads and spans.

Finishes & traction

Evaluate mill finish, painted, or hot-dip galvanized coating; slip resistance is confirmed per project.

6-Step Selection Framework

6 Steps to Specify the Right Checkered Plate

Follow these six engineering checkpoints to align profile geometry, structural span, base alloy, and environmental protection with your project specifications.

1
Step 1 · Define the Application

Determine Load Nature, Traffic Type & Environment

Identify the primary service function: walkways and platforms, stair treads, vehicle or truck beds and running boards, equipment enclosure panels, or architectural flooring. Each scenario dictates whether you need a solid surface to retain small items or an open punched profile for rapid fluid drainage.

Walkways & Platforms

Prioritize multidirectional foot traction, comfortable walking surface, and deflection between joists.

Stair Treads & Running Boards

Concentrated edge impact requires reinforced nosings or high-traction profile shapes.

Vehicle Beds & Cargo Decks

Handles dynamic wheel loads, requiring heavier base gauge and dense under-structure support.

2
Step 2 · Choose the Pattern Profile

Compare Raised Lug Ribs vs. Punched Anti-Slip Sheets

Match the working surface to one of five profiles: classic rolled raised ribs (Diamond, Two-Bar, Five-Bar) provide solid containment; punched profile sheets (Fish-Eye, Crocodile Mouth) feature pierced openings designed for liquid evacuation and aggressive tooth mechanical lock.

Step 3 · Choose Base Material

Balance Environmental Corrosion, Dead Weight & Cost

Select the base alloy according to ambient moisture and chemical exposure. Carbon steel provides economical high-load strength; stainless steel resists harsh washdown chemicals and saltwater; aluminum delivers high strength-to-weight ratio and natural atmospheric oxidation resistance.

Carbon Steel

Q235B / A36

Most common alloy for heavy plant floors and stair treads. High weldability and stiffness. Requires hot-dip galvanizing for exterior moisture resistance.

Cost & Weight: Economical, highest mass
Typical Uses: Plant platforms, truck beds

Stainless Steel

304 / 316

Essential for food processing, chemical tanks, wastewater facilities, and marine installations. Grade 316 adds molybdenum for chloride and brine protection.

Cost & Weight: Higher initial cost, long lifespan
Typical Uses: Wash bays, chemical catwalks

Aluminum Alloy

3003 / 5052 / 6061

Approximately one-third the weight of steel. Non-sparking and non-magnetic. Excellent for vehicle weight reduction and architectural applications.

Cost & Weight: Lightweight, corrosion resistant
Typical Uses: Running boards, marine decks
4
Step 4 · Thickness & Sheet Sizing

Verify Base Gauge by Span, Load & Sheet Dimensions

Structural load calculations rely strictly on base plate thickness (excluding lug height). Longer spans between support joists require thicker base gauges to prevent excessive deflection. Processing options can be coordinated through selected in-house production or partner factories, subject to project requirements and confirmation.

Base Thickness Reference (Carbon Steel)
  • 1.5 mm – 2.5 mmLight overlays, equipment covers, close-support walkways
  • 3.0 mm – 4.5 mmStandard plant catwalks, stair treads, utility trailers
  • 5.0 mm – 8.0 mmHeavy platforms, forklift aisles, wider span decking
  • 9.0 mm – 12.0 mmLoading bays, heavy equipment floors, extreme point loads

Step 5 · Choose Surface Finish

Select Mill Finish, Industrial Paint, or Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Surface protection must match ambient atmospheric exposure. Hot-dip galvanizing produces a metallurgical zinc-iron alloy coating resistant to outdoor corrosion. Stainless steel is supplied mill pickled or satin, while aluminum is available mill finish or anodized.

Mill Finish

Natural rolled mill surface. Suitable for indoor dry storage, dry machinery floors, or parts requiring subsequent welding and custom shop painting.

Indoor / Post-Fabrication

Shop Primer / Paint

Applies anti-corrosive primer or topcoat for visual identification and basic rust prevention. Requires scheduled maintenance touch-ups under high traffic.

Visual ID / Controlled Indoor

Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG)

Hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123 / GB/T 13912 standard references delivers durable barrier and sacrificial protection for outdoor infrastructure.

Step 6 · Slip Needs & Documentation

Confirm Slip Resistance & Request Material Documents

Slip resistance is confirmed per project and producing factory based on your specific floor conditions. Available processes, specifications, quality checks, and documentation are confirmed according to each product and project. Material test reports (MTR) and inspection records are available on request, depending on product and producing factory.

Pitfalls & Best Practices

Common Checkered Plate Selection Mistakes

Choosing by pattern visual appeal only

A diamond pattern that looks clean may pack with grease or mud in outdoor industrial plants. Severe environments require self-draining punched profiles like crocodile mouth or fish-eye.

Ignoring the difference between base thickness and total height

Load tables and structural calculations rely strictly on base plate thickness (t), excluding the raised lug or rib height. Specifying total height instead can cause under-designed load capacity.

Ignoring drainage and oil accumulation

Solid rolled plate holds liquids on the surface. Where water, grease, or freezing precipitation creates slipping hazards, punched open profiles or open bar grating must be evaluated.

Underestimating span deflection without intermediate supports

Unlike bar grating with deep vertical bearing bars, solid checkered plate has limited stiffness across longer spans. Adequate joist spacing or stiffener ribs must be verified.

Mismatched coating for outdoor or aggressive chemical exposure

Mill finish or simple shop primer on carbon steel rusts rapidly outdoors. Harsh weather requires hot-dip galvanizing (confirmed per project) or stainless steel (304/316).
